Marvin Lee Aday, beter bekend onder zijn artiestennaam Meat Loaf, is donderdag op 74-jarige leeftijd overleden. Zijn dochters, Pearl en Amanda, en enkele goede vrienden, haden nog de kans om afscheid te nemen. Hij was vooral bekend voor zijn hits ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ en ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’.
De zanger kampte de laatste jaren met gezondheidsproblemen, waaronder astma. Daardoor zakte hij op het podium in elkaar tijdens een concert in Pittsburgh in 2011 en werd hij opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Later gaf hij een persconferentie om zijn fans gerust te stellen over zijn gezondheid. In 2016 was Meat Loaf voor het laatst op tournee. Zijn laatste album ‘Braver Than We Are’ kwam in datzelfde jaar uit.
“Zijn geweldige carrière overspande zes decennia waarin hij wereldwijd meer dan 100 miljoen albums verkocht en meespeelde in meer dan 65 films, waaronder ‘Fight Club’, ‘Focus’, ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ en ‘Wayne’s World’.
‘Bat Out of Hell’ uit 1977 blijft een van de 10 best verkochte albums aller tijden. Wereldwijd gingen er zo'n 30 miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank. ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’, dat in de oorspronkelijke versie zo’n acht minuten duurt, is waarschijnlijk het allerbekendste nummer uit de plaat. In de videoclip is trouwens een meelippende Karla DeVito te zien, al werd de vrouwelijke stem eigenlijk ingezongen door Ellen Foley. Maar die wilde niet bekend staan als “het achtergrondzangeresje van Meat Loaf”, en dus wilde ze verder niets te maken hebben met het nummer.
“Natuurlijk was het wel even slikken toen de clip op televisie verscheen”, gaf ze later toe. “Mijn stem, maar met een ander gezicht. Velen dachten dan ook lang dat Karla DeVito de echte zangeres was, maar gelukkig weten de meeste mensen inmiddels beter.”
Later scoorde Meat Loaf nog hits met nummers als ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ en ‘I’d Lie for You (And That’s the Truth)’.
