- Ikke:

Een traditioneel, kinderachtig antwoord, nietwaar? Het is alsof verdediging jouw beste aanvalmethode is. Typisch avatarisme?...

Truth, Lies, and Wikipedia

• Can you trust information published on Wikipedia.org?

• How does Wikipedia.org deal with vandalism and defamation?

• Can Wikipedia.org's anyone-can-edit web site be held responsible for publishing

libelous, slanderous or defaming information?

It used to be that most people believed what they saw on television. Then we learned how

the broadcast networks manipulated situations to produce the "news" to drive higher ratings.

It also used to be that most people believed what they read on well known internet sites,

such as Wikipedia.org. But we're now learning that Wikipedia.org is not really as reliable an

information source as the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Perhaps Wikipedia.org is a fairly reliable source of basic scientific information, word

definitions, information on movies, books, and other such articles. But when it comes to

biographies of people it's another story all together.

Case Study - John Seigenthaler - USA TODAY

John Seigenthaler, a retired journalist and former editorial page editor at USA TODAY,

discovered that the Wikipedia.org page with his biography contained information claiming

that he was suspected of involvement in the assassination of both John and Robert Kennedy.

The article continued with details of how he lived in the Soviet Union for a period of time.

None of this information was true. The actual truth is much simpler.

Mr. Seigenthaler was an administrative assistant to Robert Kennedy in the early 60's. He

was also his pallbearer. He went on to become a respected journalist working for major

publications including the USA TODAY and founded The Freedom Forum First Amendment

Center at Vanderbilt University.

Upon searching the internet Mr. Seignenthaler found other sites that automatically copied

the information from Wikipedia.org without verifying it. He also discovered that anyone

could post anything on Wikipedia.org at any time without verification.

Even worse, he discovered that people posting information on Wikipedia.org are anonymous

and it was almost impossible to discover their true identity. The editors at

Wikipedia.org are also anonymous and are protected by an Act of the United States Congress

from being held legally responsible for liable, slander, or defamation published on their web

site. Here's a quote from an article in USA TODAY about this legal loop hole.

Federal law also protects online corporations - BellSouth, AOL, MCI Wikipedia, etc. - from

libel lawsuits. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, passed in 1996, specifically

states that "no provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher

or speaker." That legalese means that, unlike print and broadcast companies, online service

providers cannot be sued for disseminating defamatory attacks on citizens posted by others.

The editors at Wikipedia.org refused to change the defamation. Their response to his

request to remove the defamation was correcting the spelling of the article. For four months

Wikipedia.org depicted Mr. Seigenthaler as a suspected assassin before finally removing the

information. It took another few weeks for the other sites that copied Wikipedia.org to erase

the defaming and incorrect information.

Biographies of Living Persons Noticeboard

It turns out that Mr. Seigenthaler is not the only person with a Wikipedia.org biography

containing lies and defamation. There are so many issues with biography pages being vandalized

that Wikipedia.org has a special page for storing the ongoing discussions about vandalized

pages. The link to the History of this page reveals hundreds of issues, many that are

unresolved. Here's what the writers at The Wikipedia Review have to say on this subject.

Wikipedia's anyone-can-edit culture has allowed baseless defamation of various

individuals to spread widely through the Internet.

To get an idea of the scale of the problem, look no further than the archives of the Biographies

of Living Persons Noticeboard. This is the Smithsonian Institution of defamation, a vast virtual

museum bursting with tales of false rumors, libelous comments, and revenge attacks on biographical

subjects - all cataloged, dated, and folded away in neat little drop down boxes.

The noticeboard was introduced some fifteen months ago, (following the Siegenthaler controversy)

but has already swelled to unmanageable levels, becoming a burden to maintain in itself.

This is before one considers the complex subject matter of each case and the numerous legal ramifications,

which at present appear to be (mis)handled by besieged juvenile Wikipedians way out

of their depth. And the noticeboard only covers the problems that got profiled by administrators.

Most of the nastiness never even finds its way into this back chamber. And worse, a lot of the

horror remains entirely unattended to.

Biographies have been vandalized and people's lives harmed by lies about prison sentences,

affairs, divorces, sexual misconduct, court cases, and other malicious acts of anonymous

perpetrators. There is no recourse except the anonymous editors of the Wikipedia.org

web site who, at best, are backlogged and unequipped to sort through these legal matters.

Some biography pages have experienced numerous vandalisms and yet are still open for

editing by anyone with a grudge. Interestingly, the only biography on Wikipedia.org that

is locked to prevent vandalism is that of Jimmy Wales, the founder of the web site.

FAQs from www.AboutHarryPalmer.com

How would you describe yourself?

I wouldn't…(laughs) Okay, I will. Hardcore visionary! The visionary part is because

of my belief in an enlightened planetary civilization. I believe it will happen. The

hardcore part is because I am actively committed to it, and I don't give up on things I

believe in.

What is the real work to be done on this planet? It is to make ourselves more aware,

to remind ourselves that oue essential nature in nonviolent, and to increase the

amount of compassion and cooperation on the planet.

What does enlightenment mean?

It means you stop thinking of yourself as a limited, defined individual. It means that

your self interest becomes so broad that it contains all facets and all viewpoints of

life.

When you adopt the viewpoint that there is nothing that exists that is not part of

you, that there is no one who exists who is not part of you, that any judgment you

make is self‐judgment, that any criticism you level is self‐criticism, you will wisely

extend to yourself an unconditional love that will be the light of the world.

As your own true nature is realized – undefined and ever present – all will recognize

that there is no gain that we do not all participate in and no loss for which we do not

all share the sacrifice.

Why set a goal to create an enlightened planetary civilizationR?

I’ve worked a lot of jobs in my life, and I’ve been successful at most of them. But the

job that really excites me, the one that makes me feel good in my soul, is

contributing to the creation of an enlightened planetary civilization. It is a

motivation that comes from something deeper and purer than service to self.

Read Harry's article "Toward An Enlightened Civilization".

How do you plan to succeed when others have failed?

My plan is simple: help the people next to you wake up beyond their Darwinic mind

dream. And after they realize who they really are, where they are, and what is

happening, show them how to pass the lessons on. Of course, if you want their best,

full‐time efforts, there are economic and social realities that need to be considered

and addressed. People like to help each other, but they also like to live comfortably

and feel safe with friends. So the lessons must be valuable enough to the people who

receive them that they are happy to pay a fair price.

One of the things that I have learned from life is that service to others, if it is done

well and within a viable economic context, is contagious. Help someone; show

kindness, and the next thing you know they are figuring out how to pass it on to

someone else. That’s my strategy for contributing to an enlightened planetary

civilization. I intend to create, within a viable economic context, an epidemic of

compassion.

What is Avatar?

Avatar is a nine‐day self‐empowerment training delivered by an Avatar Master. The

Avatar tools are a synergy of exercises, drills, and procedures that when properly

understood and used increase your ability to live deliberately. They are remarkably

effective and efficient tools for taking control of your life. If you need to identify and

resolve a self‐sabotaging belief or behavior, the Avatar tools can help. If you want to

create a harmonious relationship, or achieve success, or just reach a pleasant state

of joy and contentment, the Avatar tools can help you. They are also effective for

removing grief and stress from your life, restoring health, and achieving peace of

mind.

Is Avatar a religion?

Avatar is not a religion. There are no members. Graduates of The Avatar Course

belong to all religions and there is no effort to convert anybody's beliefs to anything

else. The Avatar Course is a straightforward self‐development course that comes

unencumbered by beliefs, sect memberships, or any quasi‐religious rites. For these

reasons, it is the high point of the human potential movement. Its graduates are

quick to agree, “It is the most powerful, purest self‐development program available

at any price.”

Is Avatar a part of the New Age movement?

I don't come from that world. It is sometimes even a bit too bizarre for me. Most

people who became involved with Avatar aren't from the New Age corner either.

They usually have a practical professional background: doctors, lawyers, engineers,

politicians, business people. A manager, for example, uses Avatar to align the beliefs

of his employees and to prevent beliefs from entering his office that might sabotage

his projects‐‐because it is beliefs that lead to success. The same is true in personal

life. Somebody who is convinced that he is unattractive will find proof for his beliefs

and stay lonely. But as the same person finds out where this idea came from and lets

go of it, then other people will like him more. Avatar can help with this.

Why pay for Avatar?

When I started Avatar, I thought, "People who work for the good should be paid

well." In general, the exploiters become rich and the Mother Theresa's of this world

stay poor. I wanted to change this situation so that someone who works for a better

world also would get paid well. Also, this way we get good co‐workers. It makes it

more attractive to exchange a well‐paid job for Avatar activities. Moreover, it

motivates the students to get the maxi mum out of the course. It is strange, but

people are more willing to change when they pay for it than when it is for free.

For me, the money doesn't matter. Most of the money we earn goes to international

expansion. I don't know one Master who gives the course because of the money.

There are easier ways to get rich. No, the first motive is the intention to change

something in this world. We only state that one doesn't have to give up having

personal wealth for that purpose.

That goes for me too. I am not interested in wealth. I live very simply. Avatar was in

the first place a way for me to give something back to the world. I had a very easy

life, and I am grateful for that. But I didn't want to do nothing. And I didn't know of a

better occupation than to work for a world where others are doing well too. When

you ask for my ultimate goal, I would say to create a catalyst for the integration of all

belief systems.

How does Avatar work?

Avatar equips you with the tools to deliberately restructure the beliefs that form the

pattern of your life.

Your own beliefs are actually the most powerful forces that influence your existence.

They determine what you perceive and how you perceive it. They influence your

thoughts, your expectations, and your actions. They shape your personality. They

even affect the outcome of your actions and the way others perceive you and

respond to you.

Avatar helps you explore behind the scenes of your existence and discover the

uninspected, unconsciously‐held beliefs that are causing your life to be as it is.

Who takes The Avatar Course?

Students come from all walks of life — from monks to captains of finance — and a

wide range of belief systems — from fundamentalists to atheists. Most find that

Avatar intensifies their understanding of life and increases their tolerance and

compassion for others.

Is there a truth for Harry Palmer?

I don't know. There are facts. A fallen tree is a fact. Maybe even a truth. The problem

is to assess why it fell. One thinks it is because of a storm. Another believes it had

rootrot. A third holds the opinion that it was eaten from the inside by insects. And

everyone will find indications for his being right. But what is the truth? As soon as

we ask for a "why," we get beliefs instead of the truth.

People think beliefs are facts. For some, it may seem like a fact that one person is

better than another person. Of course it is just a belief. But people hold on to it with

a force that causes a lot of problems. My solution is this: if we see that we experience

what we believe, and if we allow ourselves somewhat more uncertainty, then we

don't lock ourselves up in one truth for the rest of our lives – a truth that makes us

intolerant toward people who hold another truth. Then we are no longer prisoners,

but explorers. "Knowing" is another word for believing that you are right. You define

what is real. But at the same time, you shut the door for other possibilities. And for

other visions. I think we can better enjoy each other's beliefs than fight over them.

Why are the Avatar materials confidential?

There are a number of simple reasons why parts of the Avatar materials are kept

confidential, but the most important reason requires some explanation.

Avatar is much more than a philosophy, as any student who has experienced its

transmission from a licensed Master will quickly tell you. There are word‐lessons,

and there are world‐lessons. A word‐lesson is someone’s attempt to convey his

experience to another via spoken or written symbols. A word‐lesson can be

informative or enjoyable or inspiring. A word‐lesson can be a very nice thing, but it

should not be confused with a world‐lesson.

A world‐lesson is something that a person lives through. It’s something he actually

confronts and copes with in life, and from the world‐lesson he emerges

changed...more experienced...bigger! A word‐lesson very rarely produces such a

result.

A world‐lesson is a unique personal experience; it does not require translation into

symbols or sounds to be understood. It is involvement in, and observation, of events

as they occur.

Avatar is both a word‐lesson and a world‐lesson. It is a word‐lesson only for the

purpose of introducing students to their own personal world‐lessons. The wordlessons

that Avatar conveys are insignificant compared to the world‐lessons it

opens to students.

The Avatar Course requires a well‐trained and disciplined Avatar Master to ensure

that the Avatar techniques make it off the page and into life. Avatar becomes

valuable when it is conveyed as a world‐lesson on how to assimilate world‐lessons.

Properly presented, Avatar prepares one to integrate his or her own world‐lessons

without leaving any word debris behind. Once initiated into the Avatar techniques,

life will rapidly present the individual with the unique world‐lessons that he or she

most needs to learn. Life itself becomes the teacher.

By keeping the Avatar materials confidential and permitting their teaching only by

those trained to transmit them properly, each person receives his or her own unique

world‐lesson from the Avatar experience.

Situation Report

12/12/2005

Avatar Bashers: Eldon Braun and Ronald Cools

(Basher: A person who, with or without justification, DESIRES to blame, humiliate, and

hurt others.)

Some recent rumors intentionally circulated on the Internet and via e-mail

have resulted in some confused ideas about Avatar, Harry Palmer and Star's

Edge.

Here is the real story behind them.

1. The story began in 1991 when Eldon Braun, a Provisionally Licensed

Avatar Master, was caught cheating on royalties he owed Star's Edge, Inc.

(the company that manages the Avatar network). When he still refused to

pay after several attempts to negotiate, his license to deliver the Avatar

Course was suspended.1

2. Perceiving license suspension as an insult to his self-importance, and not

being invited as a complimentary guest to the premier Wizard Course as an

additional insult, Braun decided to punish Star’s Edge and Harry Palmer,

author of the Avatar Course. 2Thus Braun began a ten-year campaign to libel

1 Braun admitted to this in pre-trial disclosures in Harry Palmer and Star's Edge vs Eldon

Braun, Case No. 6:00-cv-1662-ORL-31JGG

2 Braun wrote an expose on Harry called the Wiz of Orlando that described events that

Braun had no first hand knowledge of and had only heard about through gossip and

rumors. Much of the gossip Braun generated himself. The article is angry, vindictive, and

inaccurate. Braun boasted that he would correct any inaccuracies, but after more than 50

misrepresentations were highlighted in a copy given to Braun's attorney, Braun refused to

make changes, contending that the statue of limitations for libel had run out on the article.

At trial Braun's attorney defended Braun by pointing out that the libelous statements

posted on the Internet in 2000 were the same as those in the 1991 Wiz of Orlando and

since the statue of limitations had run out... The judge didn't buy it and found Braun

guilty of malicious libel.

2

and discredit Avatar, Star's Edge, and Harry Palmer. 3He demanded large

sums of money to stop. Using his advertising background and his study of

black (negative) propaganda techniques,4 Braun twisted facts, quoted

statements out of context, and lied outright to further his ongoing, malicious

campaign. In 2001, within days after the terrorist attacks on the Twin

Towers, Braun published terrorism-related threats toward Harry and his

wife. 5A criminal stalking complaint was filed against him with Florida law

enforcement.

3. Braun's posted intentions are to "dismantle Star's Edge", "bring Harry

Palmer down", and "to see Harry Palmer panhandling on the street."6

Ironically, at the time of these posts, Braun had only seen Harry Palmer at

public lectures and a graduation barbeque party at Harry's home where he

was one of more than fifty students.

In 1999, Braun decided to steal the Avatar Materials and rewrite them as his

own Source Course.7

4. After failed attempts to mediate with Braun, Harry Palmer and Star's Edge

filed suit against Eldon Braun in US Federal Court in 2000 for copyright

infringement and libel.8 After a formal trial, the court determined that Braun

had infringed Harry Palmer's copyrights, and was spreading malicious libel

about Palmer. The court eventually ordered him to pay fines and attorney

fees of over $450,000.00 to Harry Palmer and Star's Edge.9

5. In an attempt to abort justice, on or about July 15, 2005, Braun filed for

3 US Judge Presnell's Preliminary Injunction finding was that, "Braun engaged in a ten

year campaign to discredit Harry Palmer." The final judgment added libel.

4 According to Braun he worked for the Church of Scientology Public Relations

department in the early 1980's.

5 Braun stated that it was his Jihad to bring down Avra and Harry's Ivory tower.

6 These were postings that Braun admitted to in trial.

7 From Joint Final Pre-Trial Statement: [Braun published the Source Course because he

saw a "marketing opportunity" and a "way to make money" for himself by selling the

Source Course to Avatar students.]

bankruptcy in California. Besides the $450,000.00 owed to Harry Palmer

and Star's Edge, Braun had stuck credit card companies to a tune of

approximately $35,000.00

After a hearing, the United States Bankruptcy for the Northern District of

California, San Francisco Division discharged the credit card debits, but

ruled that, because Braun's actions against Harry Palmer and Star's Edge

were willful and malicious, any and all amounts awarded to Harry Palmer

and Star's Edge were not dischargeable in bankruptcy.10 Star's Edge

attorneys were then able to collect approximately $80,000.00 from property

that Braun owned in California. A balance due of $370,000.00 remains to be

collected.

6. Braun is still trying to threaten Star's Edge and Harry Palmer into not

collecting their judgment.11 Braun has ignored evidence contrary to what he

wants to believe and continues to use the Internet as a weapon to spread his

propaganda and lies. Braun has posted over 5,000 critical statements about

Harry Palmer, Star's Edge, and Avatar on the Internet under his own name or

under anonymous names. Braun has said that he will not stop his libel

campaign unless he is paid a million dollars. Braun has been unemployed for

several years.

7. Braun preys on mentally ill people, and using lies and manipulation,

recruits these unfortunates into joining his attacks. He advertises for

disgruntled Avatars and Masters to contact him and then he tries to

exacerbate whatever upset or misunderstanding they have into an attack on

Avatar.12 His recruiting spiel plays heavily on money, feeling victimized,

and on the failure of Star's Edge to recognize the recruit's elevated selfimportance.

He manipulatively coaches the recruits to blame Harry Palmer,

Star's Edge, and Avatar for their failures in life.

One of a small hand-full of recruits that Braun has managed to coax into

attacking Avatar is named Ronald Cools. At different times, several different

Dutch Avatar Masters have tried to help Ronald Cools assume responsibility

for his upsets and actions. After several free reviews, he was finally banned

from attending Avatar deliveries since he was continually critical and had no

interest in self-examination.

8. Ronald Cools describes himself in an Internet post: "Hi, I am Ronald, an

43 year old homosexual. I am living a very lonely life, without a

relationship, no work, almost (sic) no friends. I feel I cannot bear this

isolation any longer. I am suicidal for 3 years now, and every day is a

torture for me. My method of stepping out of life is with sleepingpills (sic)

(NItrazepam) and a plastic bag. I hope I have the strength to do it this week.

Is here anyone in the same circumstance? Please tell me. Warm regard,

Ronald Cools from Holland" 13

Cools did not commit suicide, probably didn't intend to. Instead he

counseled others on how to commit suicide. Here is an excerpt from one of

his posts: "Giving information how to commit suicide is not prohibited by

disorder and is on welfare, that Star's Edge will not sue him for his blatant

him, or reason with him, has been interpreted by him as a threat that he uses

to justify increasing his libel and copyright infringement activities. 14 He has

ignored a US Federal judge's injunction against publishing Braun's

infringing Source Course--with Braun's approval, of course.

In 2005, Braun coaxed Cools to create a hate website (avatarscam) directed

at Avatar. Most of the material on Cools' website have been written, rewritten,

inspired, or collected by Braun, some of it from a disgruntled

Scientology employee, Gale Lyons, who Harry fired 19 years ago.15 Cools

has also collected an email list of Avatar Masters and periodically spams

them with libelous out of context information about Harry Palmer, or stolen

copyrighted materials.

9. Braun directly (or indirectly through his disgruntled recruits) spends many

hours per week repeating variations of his five favorite lies:

Lie 1: that Avatar is a dangerous cult

Lie 2: that Harry Palmer is dishonest and insane

14 Cools brags that he has caused Star's Edge to file the most Digital Millennium

Copyright complaints of any organization with Google. Google has honored all

complaints and removed the infringing material, but Ron continues to violate Star's Edge

copyrights.

15 Gale Lyons has admitted that she manipulated the editor of the Elmira Star Gazette into

publishing an expose that was anti-Palmer and anti-Scientology. [Posted 8/12/2000 by

Gale Lyons: "I knew someone that was good friends with the editor in chief. It took us a

while. She heard him say that someone had called the paper concerned about a family

member that was connected to Scn. and he could find no info. She of course told me

before she said anything. We made a plan to set it up as a terrible secret and fed him

tidbits until he begged her to talk to me. After much begging I 'reluctantly' said ok. He

called me to set up a meeting. I went back to 'the rest' and told them the Star Gazett (sic)

was interested. They reluctantly (for real) agreed and I stepped into the background."]

Marjorie Kuentz-Hoffman, the Scientologist featured in the article, used her Public

Relations training to spin a soulful tale of manipulation and deceit, which in fact, was

almost entirely fiction. Two fired employees and three ex-students were dragged in to

spin an even more exaggerated story of woe for the gullible 20-something reporter. When

Braun reposted the story on the Internet, the new Elmira Star Gazette editor, informed of

the stories inaccuracies and the circumstances surrounding its publishing, twice legally

ordered Braun to remove it. Braun complied, but then reposted the story on a French

website outside of US jurisdiction.

6

Lie 3: that Avatar training harms people

Lie 4: that Avatar is connected with, or is an offshoot of, the Church

of Scientology16

Lie 5: that Star’s Edge was, or is, engaging in criminal activities.

These are malicious lies and have been documented with evidence and

testimony as lies in U.S. Federal Court. Braun has been ordered to pay large

fines for spreading them.

The final court ruling can be viewed at the Court's website:

To evade U.S. justice and the fines and other penalties levied against him,

Braun fled back to Paris where he continues to spin his lies to uninformed

people. He uses his handful of recruits to confirm each other’s lies and

spread misleading and manipulative stories to local press, TV talk shows,

school boards, and governmental agencies (including the Florida and Texas

Bar Associations, and, according to Cools, the Dutch police, the Dutch

Government, and the FBI). Among Braun's favorites slurs are that Avatar is

a UFO brainwashing cult and associated with, or similar to, the Church of

Scientology. Both statements are deliberate lies intended to inflame people

who have no experience with Harry Palmer, Star's Edge or Avatar.

If you encounter any effects from Braun's or Cools' propaganda, feel free to

use this Situation Report to establish the reality of the situation. Every

statement in it is accurate and documented. (Star's Edge will provide court

documentation, deposition transcripts, and evidence to responsible

journalists.) 17

When Eldon and Ronald get over being right, they are invited, on their own

time, to cycle between the Integrity (1) and Forgiveness Option (5) minicourses

until they feel personally responsible for their actions and no longer

have any desire to blame, humiliate, or hurt others.

The mini-courses are available for free download here:

In spite of Braun’s malicious lies and Ronald's spam emails, the Avatar

Network continues to expand. Star's Edge Trainers and staff salute the

many thousands of aligned Avatar Masters, and tens of thousands of Avatar

graduates, who are motivated by service to others, and compassion, and who

are contributing to an Enlightened Planetary Civilization.
